Twilight fandemonium has reached a fevered pitch around the world.

There is much anticipation for the movie version of the popular book series written by Stephenie Meyer which opens theatrically on November 21st. Twilight fans who are known as "Twilighters" caused a riot in San Franciso at a mall. Twilight star Robert Pattinson was scheduled to appear at the mall tour event organized by Hot Topic but canceled his appearance after things turned bloody. The movie has made the unknown actor Robert Pattinson into a teen heartthrob overnight with thousands of screaming female fans waiting over night to pay 30 dollars just to be one of the first 500 to catch a glimpse and get a picture of the hunk. Summit Entertainment is so sure that the movie is going to be a blockbuster that they are working on the sequel and bought up the movie rights to the book series. The studio realized they had a hit on their hands after the Harry Potter movie was delayed and pushed up the release from December to November. Harry Potter producer David Heyman explained to Potter fans that the film was delayed due to the Writer’s strike which left Warner Bros. with a shortage of blockbuster material for next year.

attending repeated screenings of the film. The record sales of the movie soundtrack and other paraphenalia related to the film is another sign of the film’s marketing success.
Twilight came in at only a $37 million negative cost. This
notion of a low-cost blockbuster for a start-up studio just doesn’t
happen often in the film biz. So if the movie lives up to the advance
hype, Summit will be sitting on a big new franchise. How big? Well, the
new Twilight trailer played with Quarantine this
weekend and as soon as the title came up, a chorus of high-pitched
screams of joy emanated from the women in the audience in one Southern
California theater. Only to be properly drowned out by a loud chorus of
male boos. It’s conventional wisdom that boys won’t go because there’s
not enough gory fang action. But Summit is also marketing to an online
contingent called Twilight Moms because of the chaste love story set in
the picturesque locale of Oregon and directed by thirteen’s
Catherine Hardwicke. Still, I think Summit is lowballing by hoping for
a $20M North American opening weekend from 3,500+ venues. Like Potter, Twilight has a built-in audience of book fans
with, a total 7.5 million domestic sales for all four Stephanie Meyer
novels in the series which was a New York Times #1 bestseller for 59 weeks. Not to mention big sales overseas like Italy, Germany and the UK. That’s one reason Twilight is opening day and date in 10 territories, including the U.S. source

It seems like a lot to ask, but the fate of the entire holiday movie season that begins this weekend may hinge on whether one film can live up to its pre-release hype: “Twilight.”
It’s a movie that many may not have heard of, from a studio that is probably more of an unknown quantity: Summit Entertainment. It has big shoes to fill as it’s standing in for an installment of the powerhouse “Harry Potter” franchise, which was postponed until next summer. And it’s a microcosm of what’s ahead for the industry this holiday season as few proven franchises are hitting screens this year.
Anyone with a teenager who’s been dragged to a midnight release of any of the books in the “Twilight” series by author Stephenie Meyer already knows the film is bound for a big opening weekend when it debuts Nov. 21.
Whether it can keep the industry on its near-record pace in domestic receipts could be another story, depending on how long the film’s appeal lasts. Now that “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince“ won’t hit theaters until July, there are mostly unknown quantities this holiday season.
“It looks like a quiet holiday season,” said Brandon Gray, president of BoxOfficeMojo.com. “I wish it were a bit more exciting but hopefully there’ll be some surprise successes.”
While there are two better-known films preceding “Twilight” — DreamWorks Animation’s “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” and the latest James Bond film from Sony Corp., “Quantum of Solace” — there are mostly unknown quantities until year’s end.
That means if “Twilight” can draw audiences into theaters well into December, it could bode well for some of the other movies expected to make their way on to the big screen between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.
So far, the signs are good. Close to 100 show times on the day of “Twilight’s” debut are sold out, according to online ticket seller Fandango Inc. It already comprises 63 percent of the broker’s sales, already outdistancing both “Madagascar” and “Quantum.”
“I think ‘Twilight’ is going to be a big, big hit,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
If so, it could not only lift the fortunes of holiday box office in a foundering economy, it might elevate Summit into a formidable player among Hollywood studios. source
At Mall of America on Friday afternoon, a crowd of 1,200 "Twi-hards"
– all but a handful of them teenage girls — raised the roof during an
appearance by three actors from the vampire-love film "Twilight,"
premiering at midnight Thursday. The decibel level was "the loudest
I’ve ever heard for any event here," said mall spokesman Dan Jasper.
Never mind that Taylor Lautner, Rachelle Lefevre and Edi Gathegi
were not the film’s stars but peripheral characters. The impetus for
this unholy din is a book series by Stephenie Meyers that has rocketed
from niche lit to best-selling craze. The four-book "Twilight" series
follows a vampire boy in love with a human girl, and it has spawned an
unusually intense obsession. Meyers’ vampires don’t have fangs (just
venom-coated teeth), and the good ones ("vegetarians") only attack
animals, not people.
The series is often compared to the Harry Potter phenomenon because
of its age-spanning appeal — moms like it as much as their daughters
– and magical intrigue. While only 17 million "Twilight" books have
been sold compared with 40 million for the Potter series, the hysteria
factor seems several notches higher. Crowds became unruly at mall
appearances in San Francisco and Chicago by the film’s headline
heartthrob, Robert Pattinson (who played Potter pal Cedric Diggory in
the wizard flicks). Security was tight and vigilant at the MOA event.
