Messages left for Murphy’s manager, agent and publicist by The Associated Press weren’t immediately returned.

Murphy’s husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared “dazed” as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said.
“It’s just tragic,” she said.
TMZ.com first reported Murphy’s death Sunday morning.
Murphy’s father, Angelo Bertolotti, said he learned of her death from his son, the actress’s brother, and was stunned.
“She was just an absolute doll since she was born,” Bertolotti said from his Branford, Fla., home. “Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her — people that made movies with her, people on a cruise — they all loved her. She was just a regular gal.”
He said he hadn’t heard much about the circumstances of Murphy’s death. Bertolotti divorced her mother when Murphy was young and hadn’t seen Murphy in the past few years.
“She was just talented,” he said. “And I loved her very much.”
Bertolotti was in the mob and served prison time on federal drug charges.
Born Nov. 10, 1977, in Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
Her career started in the early 1990s with small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for parts in “Girl, Interrupted,” “Clueless” and “8 Mile.”
Her on-screen roles declined in recent years, but Murphy’s voice gave life to numerous animated characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox’s “King of the Hill” and Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature “Happy Feet.”
She is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming film, “The Expendables,” set for release next year.
Her role in “8 Mile” led to more recognition, Murphy said told AP in 2003. “That changed a lot,” she said. “That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not.”
Murphy credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success.
“When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me,” Murphy said. “I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn’t stifle any of that. She always believed in me.”
She dated Ashton Kutcher, who costarred with Murphy in 2003’s romantic comedy “Just Married.”
Kutcher sent a message on Twitter Sunday morning about Murphy’s death: “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine,” Kutcher wrote. “My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. Followed by a second tweet: “see you on the other side kid.”"
“When you see her nipple, it just happened in the moment. She was playing the role of Kate Moss — you’re at a party and you are with a guy you really love and another girl.
“She is stunning and radiates in the pictures. Lindsay is incredibly focused where it comes to her career and fashion is her passion. It’s raw, it’s exposed, this is her at her best. She told me: ‘I want to make this iconic.’ ” The magazine is out tomorrow.
We are happy to report that poet laureate Maya Angelou is alive and well. A false TMZ report stated that the respected 80 something writer had been rushed to the hospital after a speaking engagement. TMZ posted an update that they were told the wrong information. We send our best wishes to Ms. Angelou. We are glad to hear she is safe at home.
Octogenarian poet Maya Angelou was alive and well on Sunday, despite the dire overnight reports of online gossip site TMZ and a panicked army of Twitter followers.
TMZ reported on Saturday night that the prolific writer was hospitalized earlier in the evening ahead of a scheduled appearance at an awards show in Los Angeles.maya2 The report spread like wildfire through cyberspace, and Angelou became the top trending topic on Twitter as anguished members of the microblogging site passed around the news. Some morbid scribes added an “R.I.P.” for good measure.
The only problem is that 81-year-old Angelou was not ill, and was nowhere near Los Angeles. She was about 1,800 miles away in her hometown of St. Louis.
TMZ updated its story on Sunday to say that Angelou was never scheduled to appear at the event. It blamed the erroneous report on event organizers, saying that someone had told one of its cameramen that Angelou was a no-show because she had been hospitalized.
The online gossip community has had a mixed track record with recent deaths and mishaps. The emergence of Twitter means that such reports now get amplified. TMZ got the worldwide scoop on the death of Michael Jackson in June, but wrongly reported the following month that former UFC superstar Kimo Leopoldo had died. Last month, gossip columnist Perez Hilton claimed that former Charlie’s Angels star Jaclyn Smith had tried to commit suicide. It appeared to be a case of mistaken identity. Hilton also suggested in 2007 that Fidel Castro had died.

Travis Barker’s ex-wife, Shanna Moakler, took to her Twitter page: “My deepest condolences for DJ AM, you were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and Prayers to his family and friends.” Katy Perry, who performed with AM and Barker at the VMAs last year when the duo acted as the night’s house band, tweeted, “Rest in peace friend.”
“I can’t believe this,” Lindsay Lohan wrote on her Twitter page. “I’m in shock. why? why? r.i.p. adam.” Perez Hilton recalled talking to DJ AM about his planned substance-abuse intervention show on MTV, “Gone Too Far,” noting that he was “so excited” for it. “I’m tempted to feel angry at the world/God right now, but I can’t. I won’t. I choose to believe Adam is free of his demons now and at peace.”
Other stars, like Heidi Montag, kept their tweets simple: “My thoughts and prayers are with DJ AM’s family and friends.” John Mayer wrote, “In complete shock. I really want to use words right now but I can’t get em. F***.”

“I don’t even kno wut to say right now,” Kid Cudi wrote on Twitter. “A true talent and supporter of mine since day 1. RIP to the big homie forever, DJ AM.” Producer Jermaine Dupri wrote, “RIP MY MAN DJ AM I CANT BELIEVE THIS.”
In DJ AM’s last Twitter post written Tuesday, he recalled a line from a Grandmaster Flash song: “New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain’t always what it seems.”
Just a month before DJ AM’s unexpected death, reportedly linked to drugs, he spoke candidly with MTV News about his struggles with addiction.
During the July 29 interview, AM said he hoped to help other addicts on his MTV substance-abuse intervention show “Gone Too Far.”
“The inspiration for the show is that I am a recovering drug addict. I have 11 years sober,” he said. “Something I have always done since the beginning of my sobriety is work with other addicts in recovery. So when the question came up : ‘Hey, we should work something out.’ It’s like, ‘What do you like to do?’ And other than DJ, that’s kind of what I’ve always done.
“Part of me feels like, ‘Who am I?’ I’m a DJ. This is my one chance. I owe it as a human who’s sober to say something to them. So that’s my job. That’s what I’m there for.”
He recalled the times before he got treatment and how hard it was for him to stay focused on what he wanted to accomplish. “I got so lost in my disease. I was gone,” he said. “I had forgotten, I would have these little moments where I would say, ‘Wow, I had goals. There was things that I wanted to do.’ ”
AM pointed out in the interview that “sobriety is for those who want, not those who need it.” While shooting the show, he easily related to the people seeking his help. “I speak addict. I am one, and they, for the first time, they see someone who’s sober, who made it out,” he said. “I see myself in every single addict that I’ve done an episode on, and we can completely relate to another.”
